The Team

SHEARLY MARKOWICZ | CEO

After several years of successfully setting up friends and co-workers (with one resulted wedding, and more to come!), Shearly decided she was meant to do matchmaking professionally. She obtained her B.S. in Business Administration from the University at Buffalo, and later went into salon management. After listening to so many women express their difficulties with meeting men in NYC, Shearly knew it was time to step in and help. With several terrible dates of her own under her belt, including a very unfortunate alien themed date, she is hoping to make other people’s dating experiences more seamless and exciting (but not alien exciting).

EMMA TESSLER | FOUNDER + EXECUTIVE MATCHMAKER

Emma Tessler is a matchmaker, founder, and director at Dating Ring. Emma studied Sociology and Anthropology at Guilford College before beginning her work as a sexuality specialist. After an illustrious career of online dating and working as a sexuality specialist, she combined her experiences to found Dating Ring with the great Lauren Kay. Her worst online date was when a guy showed her a bajillion pictures of his mother’s cats and told her all about the breeds. Did you know that the Maine Coon Cat is a direct descendant of the Lynx? In all seriousness, Emma enjoys playing geography games, positing new theories about modern courtship rituals, and discussing her favorite dinosaurs. She hates writing personal bios for websites, but ah well. You win some, you lose some.

LAUREN KAY | FOUNDER

Lauren is a founder and advisor at Dating Ring. She studied love and relationships at Brown (her parents were quite pleased) which is where she also launched her first company, SmartSitting. Before founding Dating Ring, Lauren tested the waters by going on over 50 online dates. Lauren is an advocate for female founders, and an active blogger and mentor. When she’s not busy running Dating Ring, she can be found trying to get her 3-legged cat, Legs, to cuddle, and/or rewatching Gilmore Girls for the umpteenth time.

MATCHMAKER

MARLENE

Fresh out of the Great White North, Marlene is a graduate of Vancouver, BC's Studio 58 professional theatre conservatory. With a background in theatre and casting, Marlene is delighted to be putting her study of interpersonal relationships to practical use - for your benefit! Marlene’s personal favorite date was with a lovely gentleman who recommended she go to Hawaii to find other biracial people like herself. By the time she'd stopped running, she was already halfway to Maui. Sincerely though, Marlene is grateful to be working for this exciting company with such an incredible group of people.

Ariel is so excited to be working as a matchmaker for Dating Ring. MATCHMAKER

LAURA

Laura studied public policy at Vanderbilt, but her real passion was being the self-designated social chair of her friends and throwing ridiculous themed parties that involved elaborate costumes and games. Now living alone in a big city for the first time, Washington DC, she enjoys imitating statues of former presidents, trying every bar with a rooftop, and playing competitive Taboo. Her proudest matchmaking moment was introducing two friends freshman year (they're still going strong), and hopes to continue the successful streak!

MATCHMAKER

MC

MC is a matchmaker for Dating Ring as well as a (pro bono) matchmaker for her friends and family. MC finds most of life to be “interesting” or “amazing” - especially her clients. She believes that each person’s individuality brings something great to the world and hopes to share that mindset with others. If you ask what led to her work at Dating Ring, the answer might go something like this: being single in multiple major US cities (New York City, Bay Area, Washington, DC), social work, authenticity, her unpublished article “You Know It’s Time to Leave Your First Date When…”, feminism, and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Notre Dame.

MATCHMAKER

REBECCA

Rebecca has a BA in theatre arts studies with an unofficial minor in atheism from BYU, and considers it her greatest accomplishment to date that she managed to graduate unmarried and childless (approximately 25% of the undergrad student body is married. UNDERGRAD. MARRIED. 25%). Her favorite reality TV show is Millionaire Matchmaker, and it's a secret dream of hers to have Patti Stanger intrusively adjust her bra and tell her to straighten her hair and show more cleavage. Possibly her worst date was with a girl who didn't work because she'd spent the last 10 years "healing." The girl was thinking of dropping the 2 classes she was taking because it was cutting into her busy schedule. Of healing. Rebecca's favorite things to do are drinking coffee and parsing her friends' relationships while drinking coffee. Her other job is rubbing naked people for money (aka, massage therapist).

MATCHMAKER

TANYA

Tanya studied behavioral economics and statistics at Swarthmore College. She’s been involved with the online dating industry for over 5 years. She went on too many dates with one guy, since he hinted at the possibility that he could introduce her to Pitbull. She’s since decided there are other, less dull ways to meet the artist. Tanya loves to try crazy cardio dance workouts and chug bloody marys, not necessarily one after the other. You can probably find her glued against the Anthropologie window; so many dresses, so few dollars.
